The Cathedral Quarter Masterplan sets out a confident and forward looking vision for the renewal of the city’s historic core, re establishing the area around Wakefield Cathedral as a vibrant, inclusive and sustainable heart for civic life. Led by 5plus Architects in collaboration with re-form Landscape Architecture and a multidisciplinary consultant team, the masterplan focuses on the creation of a new Cathedral Quarter which replaces The Ridings shopping centre, identified as a key catalyst within the ‘This is Wakefield Masterplan Framework’.

Wakefield is home to two art institutions of national significance, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and The Hepworth Wakefield, which together place the city firmly on the cultural map and attract visitors from across the UK and beyond. The masterplan builds on this cultural strength by introducing a new library museum and cinema, reinforcing Wakefield as a place to visit, dwell and return to. Improved physical and experiential connections encourage visitors and residents alike to explore the city centre and engage more deeply with its historic streets, spaces and everyday life.

Responding to decades of retail led inward facing development, the proposals restore a finer urban grain by reopening historic routes, removing barriers to movement and creating a clear and connected network of streets and public open spaces. A new north to south civic spine links transport hubs, cultural destinations and green infrastructure, prioritising walking, cycling and public life while strengthening legibility and ease of movement across the city centre. Car parking is consolidated and improved, reducing its visual impact while supporting accessibility and the long term vitality of the centre.

At the Cathedral Quarter, the masterplan reimagines The Ridings through a phased transformation into a mixed use neighbourhood that brings together new homes, cultural and leisure uses and a rich sequence of civic streets and public squares. These generous public spaces are designed to support events, play and daily social activity, opening up long closed edges and bringing new life and purpose back to the area around the Cathedral.

Rooted in Wakefield’s heritage, landscape and creative identity, the masterplan opens up and frames landmark views, weaves public art into the public realm and responds to climate change through green streets, tree planting and adaptable urban form. The result is a people first framework that supports city living, cultural life and economic renewal, positioning Wakefield as a confident and contemporary city with a renewed and distinctive sense of place.
