Forth Goods Yard, once a landmark goods depot driving trade and industry in the city has more recently become an underdeveloped barrier to improvement to the western edge of the Newcastle.
The re-purposing of the Goods Yard seeks to significantly improve this truly gateway site by creating highly accessible routes through the site, allowing wider connectivity with the emerging Forth Yards masterplan and once again helping to drive growth in the regeneration of this part of the city. Retaining much of the remaining heritage character and reclaiming lost arches under viaducts and bridges, the site has the potential to create a rich new residential neighbourhood adjacent Newcastle’s Central Station.
A new public high line reclaiming space above railway arches will connect the west of the city with Central Station with direct access to platforms. New pieces of public infrastructure allow accessible vertical connectivity between levels allowing connection to the Goods Yard and will ultimately allow connection to the riverside once the wider Forth Yards masterplan is developed.
The masterplan offers a car free environment with a new MSCP mobility hub positioned to benefit from proximity to Central station and new mixed uses providing activity to enliven and animate routes across the site to the wider neighbouring Forth Banks Opportunity area.
Buildings arrange around these routes providing opportunity for ground floor commercial uses activating existing arches with residential and commercial uses over with stepped massing from east to west with views across the Tyne to the south and a new Newcastle high line and cityscape to the north in the creation of a highly sustainable and character full masterplan.
