Our proposal for Plots 4 and 5, Central Square delivers an ambitious and elegant 50-storey residential tower that will become the tallest building in Wales. Designed for BlueCastle Capital, following our successful collaborations in Stevenage and Sheffield, the project delivers 528 high-quality Build-to-Rent homes supported by an unparalleled resident amenity offer and exceptional public realm.

Occupying a pivotal site between Cardiff Central Station and the Principality Stadium, the scheme forms a new landmark within the city skyline while completing the Central Square vision. Its slender profile addresses Wood Street and the square, creating a dramatic focal point framed by a tripartite façade of base, middle, and crown, culminating in a distinctive illuminated pinnacle. Drawing inspiration from the great neoclassical skyscrapers of the early 20th century, the design reinterprets classical proportions and vertical hierarchy. The building’s external appearance also draws on Cardiff’s civic architectural heritage through contemporary materials and detailing.

At ground level, the building engages the public realm with a two-storey pavilion and active frontages, including a publicly accessible cycle hub with café and repair facilities. The pavilion is conceived as a distinct architectural element, enlivening the square with dining and leisure uses, and carefully integrated with a revitalised public realm. Extending and enhancing existing open space, the landscape strategy prioritises legibility, resilience, and biodiversity, embedding nature-based solutions, shade, and cultural references inspired by the Welsh tradition of the Eisteddfod.

Residents will enjoy four levels of dedicated amenity spaces, from a club lounge, co-working and wellness facilities at the base to panoramic dining suites and a 360-degree roof terrace with sweeping city and bay views. Apartments are generously proportioned, benefiting from excellent daylight, natural ventilation, and long-range vistas. Large, spectacular penthouse apartments to 48th and 49th floors all feature private inset balconies with most benefitting from dual aspect views.

Sustainability is central to the scheme, targeting BREEAM Excellent for both tower and pavilion, Fitwel 3* certification, an EPC minimum of B, and alignment with UKGBC and LETI net zero carbon pathways. Measures include high-performance building fabric, all-electric energy systems, low water use, and biodiversity net gain through green roofs and native planting.

More than a building, Central Square is conceived as a civic destination, a place that celebrates Cardiff’s identity, supports active and sustainable travel, and offers a vibrant, welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike. Planning permission was granted in 2026 and construction is expected to commence in 2027, with completion in 2029.
