5 St Philips is an existing office building in the heart of Birmingham’s Central Business District on the corner of Colmore Row and St Philips Place. We were appointed to design the complete refurbishment of the building including a rooftop extension and external terraces. Planning Approval was granted in April 2020 for the works.

The building, originally constructed in the 1930s, is owned by Royal London Asset Management who wish to bring the building up to the 21st Century. The building is located within the Colmore Row and Environs Conservation Area and is adjacent to the Grade I Listed Birmingham Cathedral and the Grade II Great Western Arcade. Proposals have therefore been considered within the context of this sensitive setting.

The comprehensive refurbishment and the proposed extension includes the creation of a spectacular new entrance and reception space, a completely re-configured core, lifts and washroom facilities and the comprehensive replacement of all the mechanical and electrical installations. In addition, the works include the creation of state of the art staff facilities including cyclist facilities, staff showers, lockers, changing and drying space. Finally, our proposals rationalise the existing roof-top plant space creating space for new accommodation with the top floor extension. An exclusive top floor office suite with external terrace access is proposed which could also be let as a rooftop amenity space.

The building is targeting BREEAM Excellent, WELL Building Standard Gold, WiredScore Platinum, Smart Enabled and FitWell.
