Stretford Town Centre had struggled with connectivity and identity, as the outdated mall and arterial through roads dominated the area. In response, 5plus developed an outline proposal for the redevelopment of the area, supporting the client and local community to re-establish a thriving town centre. Several key themes underpinned the approach, including an aspiration for carbon neutrality, the need for inspiring places to live and the development of healthy, happy places to be. To deliver this, proposals included the refurbishment of several historic buildings such as the iconic Essoldo cinema, which was reimagined as a new cultural and food hotspot. In addition, key links to the Metrolink station, Barton Road and Victoria Park were re-established, uniting town centre amenities with the wider Stretford area. Within the existing town centre, a diverse mix of uses including retail, workspace and residential were brought together to create a vibrant, busy place to be. New buildings were informed by the historic urban grain of the area, allowing the new proposals to knit into the surrounding neighbourhoods.
