The site is located on Portsea Island in the heart of Portsmouth’s commercial city centre and in the immediate proximity of Portsmouth & Southsea Railway Station.
The aspiration for the site was to provide a unique, world-class hotel which would define a new concept hotel brand known as ‘Urban Villa’ and also initiate a regeneration of the neighbouring urban grain.
The proposed, eighteen-storey high, hotel development will provide 228 spacious rooms that will suit the needs of a wide demographic of guests. A number of ancillary functions such as a cafe/bar, restaurant and meeting rooms are located at the mezzanine and ground floor of the building. These viewed from the street through double height glazing and a well-proportioned colonnade will create an active frontage, enlivening a new public plaza in front of the building.
The strong masonry volume at the front of the building ‘unfolds’ from a distinctive two-storey base. The height of the base responds to the scale of the neighbouring buildings, this helps to connect the proposed development with its immediate urban context. The large apertures of the base provide an engaging urban event.
The development aims to be open in July 2015.
